Summer is coming to a quick close. The leaves are beginning to fall, pumpkin spice lattes are back and school is once again in session. Fall is officially in the air, even though the first day if the season isn’t for a couple weeks.
I love the fall season. There’s just something about the crisp air, the copious amounts of apples and cinnamon and the colourful leaves that get to me. Anyone who knows me is aware of how squeal-ish and excited I become just by ordering an apple spice muffin.
Here’s a list of [my] reasons why autumn is so amazing:
1. The Weather
Living in Ottawa, I experience disgustingly humid summers and frigid winters. My happy balance is the weather in the fall. It’s not cold enough for a parka but it’s also not uncomfortably hot to the point where I want to rip off my clothes. I also love the quality of the air and the breeze. I also find a sunny day in the fall beats a sunny day during any other season.
2. The Leaves (and the scenery that comes with it)
Soon when I look out my window, it will be a burst of red, orange and yellow, as the leaves all finally change colours. Once they’re on the ground, you’ll get the delight of hearing the satisfying noise of crunching leaves while you’re hurry to class or work.
3. Flavours of Fall
Pumpkin spice. Apple cinnamon. Caramel. In my coffee, muffins, donuts, pies, teas… anything incorporating those scents and tastes are part of my food pyramid between September and November. I will gladly pay $5 for my Pumpkin Spice Latte at Starbucks; I mean, it only comes out once a year, right?
In addition to these flavours, there are a lot of other foods fall is associated with. Turkeys, mashed potatoes, gravy and cranberry sauce, steamed vegetables and gourds. All of these are amazing comfort foods perfect for indulging (not perfect for the waistline, however!)
With Thanksgiving and Halloween rolling around, various festivals will be held to celebrate these autumn festivities. There are also several county fairs that will be occurring in the outskirts of the city* – this means hayrides, apple picking, face paints, outdoor entertainment and lots of horses. Skip the clubs and bars one weekend and head out to a county fair.
5. New wardrobe
I love my shorts, tank tops and sundresses while showing off my tan, but I’m ready to hang up all my skin-baring clothes and exchange them for warmer attire. Big cozy pullovers, knit tights, jackets, scarves and darker colours – fall fashion is simply the best. I’ll be sure to pull out my leather boots in the next couple weeks!
6. Saturday Morning Trail Runs
Maybe not everyone could relate to this one, but on Saturday mornings I usually have practice. In the fall, we like to go over to the Gatineau Hills to do a long trail run on the various paths. Fall is the perfect running weather paired with the great scenery of the Gats.
Do you love autumn as much as I do? What are your reasons?
